10 Best Day Trips from Seoul by Train (2026 Guide)

Seoul Is Just the Beginning

Most tourists spend their entire Korea trip in Seoul — and while Seoul is amazing (here's our guide to Seoul neighborhoods), some of the best experiences in Korea are just a short train ride away. As a Korean who has traveled extensively around the country, I can tell you: the day trips from Seoul are where the real magic happens.

Korea's train system is fast, affordable, and incredibly easy to use. The KTX bullet train can take you to the other end of the country in under 3 hours. For day trips, most destinations are 1-2 hours from Seoul Station.

Here are my top 10 day trips from Seoul, all reachable by train — ranked by how much I think you'll enjoy them.

Travel time~1 hour 20 minutes
Cost (round trip)~9,800 KRW (~$7.50 USD)
Best seasonFall (foliage) and Winter (snow)

Nami Island (남이섬) became famous as the filming location for the iconic K-drama "Winter Sonata," and it's been a top destination ever since. The island is a beautiful tree-lined paradise — stunning in every season, but especially breathtaking with fall foliage or a blanket of snow.

What to Do

  • Walk (or bike) along the famous tree-lined paths — the metasequoia lane is the most photographed spot
  • Rent a hanbok for photos on the island
  • Take the zip-line from the mainland to the island for a dramatic entrance
  • Combine with Petite France or The Garden of Morning Calm nearby (taxi from Gapyeong Station, about 20 minutes)

Local tip: Visit on a weekday if possible. Nami Island gets extremely crowded on weekends and holidays. Also, book the ITX-Cheongchun tickets in advance on the Korail app — they sell out fast on weekends.

2. Suwon — Hwaseong Fortress & Korean Street Food

DetailInfo
TrainSubway Line 1 from Seoul Station → Suwon Station (or KTX, 30 min)
Travel time~1 hour (subway) or 30 minutes (KTX)
Cost (round trip)~3,000 KRW subway (~$2.30) or ~18,000 KRW KTX (~$14)
Best seasonSpring and Fall

Suwon is home to Hwaseong Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site built in the 1790s. The fortress walls stretch 5.7 km around the old city center, and you can walk the entire circuit in about 2-3 hours with incredible views along the way.

What to Do

  • Walk the Hwaseong Fortress walls — free entry to the walls, small fee for some gates and pavilions
  • Try archery at the Hwaseong Haenggung Palace traditional archery range
  • Eat Suwon galbi (beef short ribs) — Suwon is famous for this dish. The restaurants near the fortress are excellent
  • Explore Suwon Nammun Market for street food — sundae (blood sausage), tteokbokki, and hotteok

3. Jeonju — Korea's Food Capital

TrainKTX from Yongsan Station → Jeonju Station
Travel time~1 hour 40 minutes
Cost (round trip)~38,000 KRW (~$29 USD)
Best seasonAll year (food doesn't have a season!)

If you love Korean food (see our Korean food guide for beginners), Jeonju is a must-visit. This city is considered the birthplace of bibimbap and is officially recognized as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy. The Jeonju Hanok Village — a neighborhood of 700+ traditional Korean houses — is one of the most charming places in all of Korea.

What to Do

  • Eat Jeonju bibimbap — the original version with 30+ ingredients. Completely different from what you'll find in Seoul
  • Wander through Jeonju Hanok Village — rent a hanbok (many shops offer free or cheap rentals) and explore the traditional houses, tea shops, and craft stores
  • Try Jeonju choco pie — a local twist on the classic snack, available everywhere in the village
  • Visit Gyeonggijeon Shrine — a beautiful and peaceful royal portrait hall within the village

Foodie tip: Don't just eat bibimbap. Jeonju is also famous for kongnamul gukbap (bean sprout soup rice), makgeolli (rice wine) paired with pajeon (green onion pancake), and PNB bakery's choco pie. Come hungry!

4. Gangneung — Beach Town & Coffee Culture

DetailInfo
TrainKTX from Seoul Station → Gangneung Station
Travel time~1 hour 50 minutes
Cost (round trip)~56,000 KRW (~$43 USD)
Best seasonSummer (beach) and Winter (ocean views)

Since the KTX line extended to Gangneung for the 2018 Winter Olympics, this east coast city has become one of Korea's hottest destinations. It offers something Seoul can't: the ocean.

What to Do

  • Visit Gyeongpo Beach — one of Korea's most famous beaches, with a beautiful pine tree-lined promenade
  • Explore Anmok Beach Coffee Street — an entire street lined with ocean-view cafes. Gangneung is Korea's unofficial coffee capital
  • Eat sundubu (soft tofu) at Chodang Village — this neighborhood is famous for handmade tofu dishes
  • Visit Ojukheon — a historic house featured on the 5,000 won bill and 50,000 won bill

5. DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) — History Like Nowhere Else

TrainGyeongui-Jungang Line from Seoul Station → Dorasan Station
Travel time~1 hour 30 minutes
CostTrain ~3,000 KRW + Tour varies (~50,000-80,000 KRW)
Best seasonAll year

The DMZ is one of the most unique places on Earth — the border between North and South Korea. While you can take the train to Dorasan Station (the last station before North Korea), most DMZ areas require a guided tour for security reasons.

What to Do

  • Joint Security Area (JSA) — step inside the blue UN buildings that straddle the border. You'll technically be in North Korea for a moment. Must book a tour in advance
  • Dorasan Station — the northernmost train station, built for the day the two Koreas reunify. Haunting and emotional
  • Third Infiltration Tunnel — walk into a tunnel that North Korea dug under the border
  • Dora Observatory — use binoculars to look into North Korea's propaganda village

Important: You must bring your passport for the DMZ tour. No exceptions. Also, dress code applies at the JSA — no sandals, ripped jeans, or sleeveless tops. Book your tour at least a few days in advance as spots fill up.

6. Incheon — Chinatown & Coastal Vibes

DetailInfo
TrainSubway Line 1 from Seoul → Incheon Station
Travel time~1 hour 10 minutes
Cost (round trip)~3,200 KRW (~$2.50 USD)
Best seasonSpring and Fall

Most tourists only see Incheon's airport (check our Incheon Airport to Seoul transportation guide), but the city itself has a lot to offer — Korea's only Chinatown, beautiful coastal parks, and a fascinating open port history.

What to Do

  • Explore Incheon Chinatown — eat jajangmyeon (black bean noodles, a Korean-Chinese dish invented here)
  • Walk through Songwol-dong Fairy Tale Village — a colorful mural village next to Chinatown
  • Visit Wolmido Island — a seaside amusement area with cafes, rides, and ocean views
  • Take the ferry to Muuido Island — a quiet island with beautiful beaches, just 1 hour from Incheon

7. Gyeongju — The Museum Without Walls

DetailInfo
TrainKTX from Seoul Station → Singyeongju Station
Travel time~2 hours
Cost (round trip)~86,000 KRW (~$66 USD)
Best seasonSpring (cherry blossoms) and Fall

Gyeongju was the capital of the ancient Silla Kingdom for nearly 1,000 years, and the entire city is basically an open-air museum. UNESCO World Heritage sites are scattered everywhere — you'll stumble upon ancient tombs just walking down the street.

What to Do

  • Explore Bulguksa Temple — one of Korea's most important Buddhist temples (UNESCO World Heritage)
  • Visit Seokguram Grotto — a hilltop Buddha statue carved into a granite cave, overlooking the East Sea
  • Walk through Tumuli Park — a park filled with ancient royal burial mounds in the heart of the city
  • Rent a bicycle and ride around Gyeongju Historic Areas — the city is flat and bike-friendly
  • Try Gyeongju bread (경주빵) — a famous local pastry filled with red bean paste

Tight on time? Gyeongju is doable as a long day trip (leave Seoul by 7 AM, return by 10 PM), but it's better as an overnight trip. There's simply too much to see in one day. If you only have one day, focus on Bulguksa Temple + Tumuli Park + Gyeongju National Museum.

8. Sokcho & Seoraksan — Mountain Adventure

DetailInfo
TrainKTX from Seoul → Gangneung, then bus to Sokcho (or express bus from Seoul)
Travel time~2.5-3 hours total
Cost (round trip)~60,000-70,000 KRW (~$46-54 USD)
Best seasonFall (peak foliage mid-October)

Seoraksan National Park is Korea's most famous mountain and a must-visit for nature lovers. The fall foliage here is legendary — it's the first place in Korea where the leaves change color, usually in mid-October.

What to Do

  • Hike the Ulsanbawi Rock trail — a challenging but rewarding 3.8 km hike with spectacular views (808 steel stairs at the end!)
  • Take the Gwongeumseong cable car — for incredible mountain views without the hike
  • Visit Sinheungsa Temple — a beautiful temple at the entrance of the park with a giant bronze Buddha
  • Eat fresh squid at Sokcho's famous Jungang Market — the seafood here is outstanding

9. Buyeo — Ancient Baekje Kingdom

DetailInfo
TrainKTX to Gongju, then bus to Buyeo (or express bus from Seoul)
Travel time~2-2.5 hours
Cost (round trip)~30,000-40,000 KRW (~$23-31 USD)
Best seasonSummer (lotus festival in July) and Fall

If Gyeongju represents the Silla Kingdom, Buyeo represents the Baekje Kingdom — another of Korea's ancient Three Kingdoms. It's less touristy than Gyeongju, which means a more authentic and peaceful experience.

What to Do

  • Visit Busosanseong Fortress — hike through the historic fortress with views of the Geum River
  • See the Baekje Cultural Land — a recreated Baekje-era palace and village complex
  • Explore Gungnamji Pond — Korea's oldest artificial pond, stunning during the lotus bloom in July
  • Visit the Buyeo National Museum — home to the famous Baekje Incense Burner, a national treasure

10. Chuncheon — Dakgalbi & Lake Views

DetailInfo
TrainITX-Cheongchun from Yongsan Station → Chuncheon Station
Travel time~1 hour 20 minutes
Cost (round trip)~13,200 KRW (~$10 USD)
Best seasonAll year

Chuncheon is famous for two things: dakgalbi (spicy stir-fried chicken) and beautiful lake scenery. It's an easy and affordable day trip that's popular with Korean couples and families.

What to Do

  • Eat dakgalbi at Chuncheon Myeongdong Dakgalbi Street — this is where the dish was invented. Order it with cheese and fried rice
  • Take a boat cruise on Uiamho Lake — peaceful lake surrounded by mountains
  • Visit Gangchon Rail Bike — pedal a rail bike along a scenic former railroad track
  • Explore Chuncheon Romantic Market — a covered market with food stalls and K-drama themed decorations

How to Book Train Tickets

Booking Korean trains is straightforward. For getting around within Seoul, see our complete Seoul subway guide.

Korail App / Website

  1. Download the Korail Talk app (available in English)
  2. Create an account (you can use a foreign passport number)
  3. Search for your route, select a train, and pay by card
  4. Your ticket is stored in the app — no need to print

At the Station

You can also buy tickets at ticket machines (English available) or at the ticket counter in any major station. Arrive 15-20 minutes early to allow time for buying tickets.

Korea Rail Pass (KR Pass)

If you plan to take 3+ long-distance KTX trips, the KR Pass may save you money. It offers unlimited KTX rides for a set number of days:

  • 2-day pass: ~110,000 KRW (~$85 USD)
  • 3-day pass: ~132,000 KRW (~$101 USD)
  • 5-day pass: ~198,000 KRW (~$152 USD)

Money-saving tip: The KR Pass is only available to foreign tourists — Koreans can't buy it. Purchase it online before your trip and pick it up at Seoul Station. For a single day trip, individual tickets are cheaper. The pass makes sense if you're doing multiple trips.

My Top 3 Recommendations

If you only have time for a few day trips, here are my personal picks:

  1. Jeonju — for the food, the hanok village, and the overall atmosphere. It's quintessential Korea
  2. DMZ — for a truly unique and unforgettable experience you can't get anywhere else in the world
  3. Nami Island + Gapyeong — for natural beauty, especially in fall or winter

Korea is a small country with an incredible train network. Don't limit yourself to Seoul — some of your best travel memories will come from these day trips. Happy exploring!
